Music Mondays – Lawsuit Over Drake’s First 6 Albums Settled

Drake is signed to Cash Money Records but was first signed to Aspire Music Group in 2008 for his first six albums. In 2009, Aspire made a deal with Cash Money to allow Drake to record for the label. Aspire was supposed to receive one-third of the master recording copyrights for the first six albums. But Cash Money failed to pay its due share and Aspire took them to court and won.The legal battle between Aspire and Cash Money began in 2017 even though Drake released his hit records between 2009 and 2016: So Far Gone (2009); Thank Me Later (2010); Take Care (2011); Nothing Was the Same (2013); If You’re Reading This (2015); It’s Too Late and Views (2016). In the lawsuit, Aspire also claimed that monthly accounting was sporadic and unreliable.
Further upsetting Aspire, they state that in “2013 Cash Money attempted to cut them out by trying to get Drake to sign an “exclusive artist agreement” despite the pre-existing deal between the two companies.” Lastly, Aspire says that their partial ownership of Drake’s first six albums was not “registered with the U.S. Copyright Office or royalty administrators such as SoundExchange.”

Terms of the settlement were not disclosed.
