Music Mondays: Lucid Dreams Faces $15 Million Copyright Suit

Emo Rapper, Yellowcard, has filed a $15 million lawsuit against Juice WRLD over the 2018 song, “Lucid Dreams.” The song was a big hit for Juice WRLD, and Yellowcard claims that it is a copy of his 2006 song “Holly Wood Died.” The copied elements include the number of notes, pitch, synchronicity, and melody. The lawsuit includes co-defendants, the co-writer, producer, and publishing companies (BMG Rights Management), and the parent company, Interscope.

The suit claims that “Juice WRLD and his producers knowingly copied “Holly Wood Died,” and that “Lucid Dreams” “directly misappropriates quantitative and qualitatively important portions of [‘Holly Wood Died’] in a manner that is easily recognizable to the ordinary observer.” It adds that “Lucid Dreams” is “not only substantially similar to [‘Holly Wood Died’], but in some places virtually identical.”

The defendant is significantly younger than Yellowcard. The suit claims that based on interviews given by Juice WRLD, “at the time Defendant Juice WRLD began studying the Emo genre of music, ‘Holly Wood Died’ would have been recently released.” Have a listen and let us know what you think!
