After a year-long court battle, Nicki Minaj has won a copyright infringement lawsuit brought on by singer-songwriter Tracy Chapman. Chapman sued the superstar after a mixed-tape leaked that sampled Chapman’s hit, “Baby Can I Hold You,” in 2018’s “Sorry” with Nas. Minaj’s legal team argued that the mix was an experiment that “fell within fair use rights and that she had reportedly attempted to obtain Chapman’s permission numerous times.”
The judge in the case ruled that “Artists usually experiment with works before seeking licenses from rights holders and rights holders typically ask to see a proposed work before approving a license,” she declared. “A ruling uprooting these common practices would limit creativity and stifle innovation within the music industry.”
