Scientology Documentary to Air on UK Small Screens – Film Fridays

The controversial documentary on Tom Cruise’s favorite subject, the religion of Scientology, may finally be getting its chance to be shown in the UK. Made through a partnership between UK company Sky Atlantic and US broadcaster HBO, “Going Clear” was released in the US in March but has yet to be shown in the UK under the legal threat of the UK’s libel laws. The film explores the dark origins of Scientology and the alleged abusive practices at the American headquarters, leaving Scientology supporters less-than-thrilled with its release. The Church of Scientology has widely denounced the film as “one-sided, bigoted propaganda,” while on the other hand, it has received wide critical acclaim and public support in the US, including multiple Emmy nominations and more than 5.5 million views on HBO. Despite the Church’s threat to pursue legal action in the UK for defamation, Sky Atlantic has confirmed that “Going Clear” will be shown starting Sept. 21. “Both Sky, and the producers of the film, have sought legal advice at every stage of the process and are confident the film complies with legal requirements in the territories in which we are screening the film,” a spokesman for Sky told The Guardian. In the meantime, US audiences can head over to HBO to watch the film now.
