While Disney is in the states fighting legal battles with its darling “Frozen” , another war is raging in China over a recently-released Chinese film, “The Autobots”. Disney is threatening legal action against Chinese filmmaker, Zhuo Jianrong, for creating an animated film about cars that appears to look remarkably similar to Disney’s own animated film about cars, “Cars”.
While Zhuo aknowledges that he has heard of “Cars”, he maintains that he has never seen it and that his film is different, aiming “to teach children about thinking and innovation.” At the same time, Chinese filmgoers have complained that they thought they were going to see a sequel to “Cars” and not a completely separate film. The fate of “The Autobots” is up in the air, but what is certain is Disney’s continued domination over the animated automobile world, with a “Cars 3” already in production. Moral of the story- where ever you are in the world, if you mess with Disney, the legal team will find you.
