FILM FRIDAY!! In light of the 20th anniversary of the late Tupac Shakur’s death, a second teaser of his biopic was released. The film’s forthcoming debut will come at a critical time in the United States, as racial inequalities once again are the topic of discussion.
The coincidence of the Tupac biopic with the unfortunate events that have plagued the American people in recent times seems a bit uncanny. The very issues Tupac rapped about over two decades ago have persisted and arguably have intensified with the addition of social media.
In all likelihood though, this film is not being released for the potential social benefit it may yield, but rather to capitalize on a similar films incredible success. Just last year Straight Outta Compton debuted and was an instant hit by grossing over $200 million worldwide. The two films share are arguable interchangeable with their focus on controversial hip-hip artists during the 90s.
Will the Tupac biopic be as successful as Straight Outta Compton was? Will the film inspire change in the criminal justice system, and have positive societal ramifications? We sure hope so.
