In March 2017, 21 Jump Street screenwriter Michael Bacall sued Jeffrey Shumway, his former lawyer/manager. Bacall realized in 2016 that Shumway’s bar license had been inactive for years while he was still representing him. Shumway and Bacall’s relationship goes back to the late 1980s when Becall had been working as a child actor on such shows as The Wonder Years and Punky Brewster. Becall claimed that Shumway tricked him into signing a contract to formalize their relationship in 2016 when he was unauthorized to practice law.
A Los Angeles judge awarded Bacall nearly half a million dollars in the dispute with his former lawyer/manager. The award included the returned fees of $201,025 for work performed between Jan 1, 2016, and May 26, 2017 — plus $207,861 for attorneys’ fees and $29,745 in expert witness fees in connection with the dispute. Shumway’s attorney’s petitioned to vacate the award, but the ruling judge denied the petition.
