Tunesday Tuesday- Kesha’s Battles Continue and “Tik-Tok” Goes the Clock on her Career

One of the biggest stories in legal news for the entertainment industry is the nasty, ongoing legal war between singer Kesha and her once-producer, Dr. Luke. For a refresher, see “Kesha’s Legal Woes Threatening to Make People Yell “TIMBER” for Her Career.” A few weeks ago a judge in New York denied Kesha’s request to be released from her contractual obligation with Dr. Luke’s Kemosabe Records (under Sony’s umbrella). This ruling put Kesha’s case back into the spotlight and reinvigorated the (heavily celebrity-backed) campaign, #freekesha. Now both sides are gearing up for a jury trial, but this may not bode well for the singer, whose last album was released in 2012. A jury trial could last a long time, during which Kesha would still not be able to legally make music. A secondary option? Both parties may agree to a confidential settlement and the charges against Dr. Luke would be dropped. We will continue to be following the case, as it’s a strong example of the importance of contract negotiations.
